The Samsung Odyssey G3 S24AG30 has a VA panel with an excellent native contrast ratio for deep blacks. In order for them to see the same image quality, they have to bring their head to where yours is. Enabling Windows ClearType (top photo) makes letters bolder. However, at lower brightness levels, the backlight flickers at a frequency of 1260Hz which is very high and it is unlikely that you will notice anything. About 2 years ago Samsung launched their new Odyssey line-up of gaming monitors, two of which we reviewed at the time in the form of the 32 C32G75T and 27 C27G75T, or the Odyssey G7 as they were known. The S24AG30 has a different design with a worse swivel range, and it has a USB input, but you can't use it for charging. Excellent performance here. If you do want to disable adaptive-sync, this opens up a few other options like the Motion Blur Reduction (MBR) backlight mode, and as we say it also gives you access to the response time setting where there are options for standard, faster and extreme. It has incredibly low input lag, a high refresh rate, and exceptional response times, so gaming feels smooth and responsive. Finally, the Acer supports HDR, whereas the Lenovo only supports SDR. You can hardly notice any banding, as the transition from light to darker shades happens smoothly in almost all colors. While the Samsung has a higher 165Hz refresh rate, motion is much better on the ASUS as it has a near-instantaneous response time. The Acer Nitro XV272U KVbmiiprzx is better than the LG 27GL83A-B for most uses. Unlike the higher refresh rates, there isn't any overshoot with the VRR enabled, but instead, it has a slower total response time, leading to some motion blur. The local dimming doesn't seem to do much in SDR, as the contrast remains almost unchanged. These will support 4K 120Hz gaming where the console supports it and the native screen resolution of 4K means no need for scaling or interpolation from a lower resolution. The G7 is available in both 27 and 32 inches and has a 16:9 aspect ratio. The low auto dimming mode seemed to focus more on reducing halos and blooming by being a little more subtle in its local dimming. 170Hz refresh rate and exceptional response times. This finally made VA a more viable option for high end gaming, and opens up the benefits of this panel technology like its high contrast ratios to more gamers. It's slightly above the advertised 1000:1 contrast; however, this can vary between units. The photo of the pixels looks blurry due to the screen's anti-reflective coating. It's just a little lower than the advertised 2500:1; however, it can vary between individual units. The Samsung Odyssey G7 LC32G75T and the Dell S2721DGF are very different monitors. The stand's feet are very wide but thin, so there's still a good amount of usable desk space in front. Note that not all games support a 32:9 aspect ratio, so you might get some black bars on the side, or the image might be stretched out to fill up the whole screen. Also, there's a bit of a gap between the bottom bezel and the screen at certain parts because it's not evenly attached. We are aware that Hardware Unboxed reported being able to achieve >2000 nits in a very specific 10% APL test pattern in their review (but never in any other situation), but we couldnt even replicate that here. We encountered a bug during testing, causing our calibration settings to reset and return to the default values. There's a bit of wobble on the stand, but it shouldn't be a worry if you have a stable desk. If you find the 32:9 aspect ratio too big, then check out the Samsung Odyssey G5 LC34G55T, which has a 21:9 aspect ratio. The overall picture quality is better on the Samsung as it delivers deeper blacks with much better local dimming and makes smaller highlights pop more in HDR. Despite many attempts in different modes, different colour temp modes and with different settings and even different calibration devices, we could not seem to get a perfect colour accuracy. The curvature of the screen is likely to be a key consideration for buyers as the 1000R curvature is steep and aggressive, especially on a relative small, non-ultrawide screen like this. The 'Standard Engine' with a limited range of 80 to 100Hz and the 'Ultimate Engine' with a range of 20 to 100Hz. It has a large ultrawide screen with ample resolution that favors multitasking but unfortunately, it has poor viewing angles. With the local dimming disabled, the flicker starts with the brightness set to '10' or lower, and the flicker is high enough that you won't notice it. Adobe RGB Picture Mode: Custom. It is more suitable for an average lit room as it cannot get very bright to fight bright room glare. The best Overdrive setting is 'Off' because the other options have slower total response times and more overshoot. Over DisplayPort, it's only possible to get 240Hz with graphics cards that have the Display Stream Compression (DSC) feature, such as NVIDIA RTX 20- Series cards and AMD 5300 or newer. The recommended Overdrive setting is 'Normal' because 'Off' is slower and 'Extreme' has too much overshoot. One of the key features of this screen is its high 3840 x 2160 Ultra HD (4K) resolution which is an upgrade over the previous Odyssey G7 model which offered the same 240Hz refresh rate, but with a 2560 x 1440 resolution. The screen looks very dark out of the box and is set for some reason at a brightness level of 13. Its certainly viable unlike on a 27 models with 4K where you really have to use 150% scaling to make it usable. On the upside, it has near full coverage of the sRGB color space and decent color accuracy out-of-the-box. Gaming is a key focus of the Odyssey Neo G8 and this is the first screen weve seen released that combines a 4K resolution with a high 240Hz refresh rate! Best of all they also avoided all the issues with the dreaded VA black smearing like the older Odyssey G7 models had, making the panel very well suited to gaming. It's much higher than the advertised 3000:1 contrast, but this can vary between units. Another difference is that the Neo G8 uses a different screen coating with much better reflection handling. The column is metal, and the base has a metal plate underneath the plastic shell. There is a fairly thin border around the sides and top, although the black plastic edge of the screen slopes away from you and so provides extra width. The accuracy after calibration to the D65 white point is fantastic, and any remaining inaccuracies can't be spotted by the naked eye. The Samsung Odyssey G9 is a different monitor than the Samsung Odyssey Neo G7 S32BG75. The backlight is flicker-free at all brightness levels. All of these are pretty smooth and easy to use, although the screen does have a fair wobble to it when you re-position it, or even while using the OSD control buttons on the bottom edge. It has good gaming features because it has a fast 144Hz refresh rate with VRR support and low input lag. It is very responsive to your actions but you should avoid placing it in a very bright room as it cannot fight bright room glare. If you care about image accuracy, the Dell has much better out-of-the-box accuracy and better motion handling with high-frame-rate signals. It also displays deep blacks if you want to view content in the dark, but sadly, it doesn't support HDR. The G9 has a higher 240Hz refresh rate, but the motion handling is better on the G7. The Picture mode with the best results is 'Custom'. The AOC 24G2 is a much better gaming monitor than the Samsung Odyssey G3 S24AG30, but they use different panel types. There are reports of visible image flickering when HDR is enabled at 240Hz, but the issue isn't present on our unit. We were a bit disappointed to see that pushing to max refresh rate introduced some visual issues like the scan lines we documented, but likely only a problem in some situations and to some users. The LG is a productivity monitor with a basic 60Hz refresh rate with no VRR support, while the Samsung is more gaming-focused, with a 240Hz refresh rate. The fast response time ensures a crisp image with little motion blur in fast action games. It has other gaming features like FreeSync variable refresh rate (VRR) support and G-SYNC compatibility. Samsung are continuing this trend today with their latest generation of Odyssey Neo screens including the model we have with us for testing the Odyssey Neo G8. Visually you could see a few overshoot artefacts creeping in when using the middle faster mode, but nothing too severe. Fall times (changes from light to dark shades) were much quicker and on par with the performance when local dimming was turned off, so it seems the screen just has some additional delay when trying to brighten a zone, but is fast when it decides to turn that zone off.
